Extended Absence
Oldham Local Education Authority has revised the regulations concerning extended absence for children and this particularly affects children who take time off school to visit relatives in Bangladesh and Pakistan.
The main features of the regulations are :
• Extended absence can be granted for a maximum period of 4 weeks term time.
• Only one such absence should be granted during the secondary phase of education.
• A home-school contract, with the date of the return, should be agreed and signed by parents and school.
• Failure to agree to a home-school contract or a non-return by the agreed date places the child at risk of losing his/her school place.
• Requests for extended absence should be made well in advance of the actual absence except in exceptional circumstances, e.g. family bereavement.
• Information on extended absence will be recorded on the L.E.A. half termly attendance return.
The school understands the need for families to visit relatives in Bangladesh and Pakistan but please could I ask that you limit your visit to the four weeks term time as outlined above and that you only take your pupils once during their time at Grange School.
I would also like to thank all those families who time their visit overseas to coincide with our six week summer holiday. Obviously this gives children the opportunity to go for up to 10 weeks in total.
