Welcome to the Science Department

ADDITIONAL PROVISIONS

Within the science department, members of staff have always aimed to provide opportunities for pupils to develop themselves even further within this subject area.

Year 9 study support sessions

Pupils attended 45 minute – 1 hour study support sessions held on Wednesday evenings from March to May in preparation for their SATs exams. Pupils worked in small groups and also received one-one guidance and help on areas of the curriculum they had difficulty with.

Year 10&11 half term revision sessions and Saturday school

For our KS4 cohort, every half term sessions had been organised for pupils to come in to school and get extra help on planning and preparation for external GCSE exams. These proved to be a success with pupils as attendance was 90% and above, not to mention the results!

Year 9 booster revision day at Westwood East Restaurant

Over 60 pupils attended a revision booster session organised by science staff at Westwood East Restaurant during the bank Holiday Weekend in May. Pupils were split up into 3 groups and taught key concepts in Biology chemistry and Physics as part of their preparation for the science SATs exams.

Food and refreshments were provided, and the pupils had a great day out too!

Year 8 science challenge day

12 pupils from year 8 were chosen to take part in a borough wide science challenge day held at the Oldham Sixth Form College this summer term. Pupils took part in activities related to Robotics and Engineering, with the assistance of students from the University of Liverpool.

Year 10 ‘Feel the Force’ trip to Alton Towers

42 year 10 pupils were taken to Alton Towers this year in April as part of the physics units in the GCSE and BTEC courses. Pupils took part in demonstrations and interactive activities designed and developed by the ‘Mad Science’ team, related to forces and their effects.
